Venice Beach Ocean Front Walk Refurbishment, begun in 1998

The artist team was hired to work with the RRM Design Group on the design of a new plaza for Ocean Front Walk in Venice Beach. In addition, the artists were asked to function as lead artists, defining and providing opportunities for three other artists and artist groups that were pre-selected. Those artists were the locally based William Attaway, S.P.A.R.C. (Social and Public Art Resources Council) and Noel Osherhoff with Clayworks and the Venice Community Housing Corporation. The lead artists also requested assistance of the local but nationally respected Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center to select appropriate poetry by Venice writers past and present for use in various locations along Ocean Front Walk.

In that Venice Beach features a complex, chaotic display of streaming humanity as entertainment, a robust and vibrant art plan was developed to match the environment. The lead artists designed the main plaza at Ocean Front Walk referencing concepts from the idea of the modern Baroque, creating places for people watching and performances. Notions of Venice’s location at the “edge” where urban development meets the world’s largest body of water also came into play. Venice’s history was integrated in contemporary, hybrid forms.
