Stone Tree Inverted Post Copper Bound Water Light, 2003

The design of the Avenue 57 Station focuses on a celebration of the existing unique character of the Highland Park community. The structural organization of the elongated plaza and its colonnade of trees highlight the indigenous Craftsman Style architecture of the area with its use of large wood beams, extended eves and local arroyo stones. The installation of three art elements at the site provides a connection between the plaza as a neighborhood/home and the station as embarkation point to the world beyond. The expansive “Stone Tree”, 18” high by 16” wide, is a strong vertical element and the focal point of the plaza. The tree is “copper bound” with one-inch thick copper wire that is tightly wrapped around the trunk. It is a conjunction of the human-made and the natural.

On the station platform two inverted canopy support posts function as a platform lighting elements. Called “Inverted Post”. They are set in benches that blank the platform canopy. The inverted posts are topped by large, 3’ diameter, illuminated, blue globes. Labeled “Water Light” they act as a metaphor fir water and light.
